Letters, 1839, 1847.

The 1847 letter to William F. Tolmie (WA MSS 141) announces the destruction of the Whitman mission and the massacre of its staff, while the 1839 letter to William Kittson (WA MSS 140) informs him that Reverend Leslie is coming to Fort Nisqually to establish a mission, outlines the Hudson's Bay Company's tract of land, and directs Kittson to give part of the land to the mission.

Sir James Douglas (1803-1877) worked for the North West Company under Dr. McLauglin at Fort Vancouver and later succeeded him as chief factor. In 1849 he moved to Victoria and served as governor of the Hudson's Bay Company on Vancouver Island until 1859, when he as appointed governor of British Columbia. William Fraser Tolmie (1812-1886), graduated from the Medical College of Edinburgh, joined the service of the Hudson's Bay Company, arrived at Fort Vancouver in 1833, and later became chief trader at Fort Nisqually and agent of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company.
